The advent of the CD Player revolutionised the HiFi industry. Digital audio on CD is clean, crisp and detailed when compared to old magnetic cassette tape, and the popularity of this medium has made it the world wide standard since the 1980's. CD media continues to be the popular choice for music, with modern CD players able to play multiple formats of CD Audio, including writable CD-R and CD-RW formats, and high definition SACD.
One of the most important and unrecognised components of a CD Player is the DAC (Digital to Analogue Converter). The DAC in a CD Player is the component that is responsible for turning the digital audio (stored on the CD as a series of 1's and 0's) into sound that can be reproduced by speakers for us to hear. The differences in the sound quality of different CD Players is largely related to the quality of the DAC used.
The excellent quality of CD Players from companies such as Denon, NAD, Rega, Cambridge Audio, Quad and Meridian is largely due to the use of quality components and sophisticated technology in the DAC to faithfully reproduce the sound of the original recording. A good quality CD Player is an extremely important part of any HiFi stereo system.
